Amongst 700 loaves of bread and pastries from 122 local businesses there was one that was the champion loaf at the Perth Royal Show Bread Judging- the multigrain variety from baker's Delight in Mandurah.

After hours of deliberation, the multigrain variety was announced as the winner, shunning the traditional white loaf of the winners podium. “Traditionally you wouldn’t even have multigrain as one of the classes but this year it’s won the championship loaf so you can see how it has come from nothing to that sort of prominence,” Chief Judge Mr Noonan said.

What makes a winning loaf of bread? Well the judges look for superior technical prowess in the art of baking, which boils down to looking good, tasting good, smelling good and will it keep fresh?

Other category winners yesterday included Ming’s Bakery in Woodvale for best meat pie. The most successful exhibitor in pastry cooking was Denmark Bakery, with wins in the chicken, lamb, gourmet beef and apple pie categories and the Swiss roll.

Move over white bread, multigrain is in the house!

The Perth Royal Show runs from September 27th to October 4th 2008.

I'm a fan of Helga's bread.

We used to make our own. It always smelt soooo good!

Multigrain for sandwiches, white bread for toast is how I fare in the bread stakes.

There is nothing better than a fresh piece of white bread with some avocado and vegemite. Delicious.
