Manjimup truffle grower Nicholas Malajczuk, who started WA's first truffle farm with former cricketer Wally Edwards, ten years ago - is jumping with joy at the fact he has farmed the biggest crop of 'black gold' in the southern hemisphere, beating truffle growers in Tasmania and New Zealand.

They are predicting even bigger and better things for next year too, after the Manjimup Wine and Trufle Company dug up more than 600kg of truffles, nearly double what they produced last year. They sell for about $3000 a kilo, so that means they have bought in $1.8 million harvest.

The French black truffles are grown on the roots of 13,000 oak and hazelnut trees at Hazel Hill and found by trained sniffer dogs, before being sold to restaurants worldwide with International buyers from Japan, USA, Hong Kong, Singapore, Italy, France and Idonesia.

The small timber town of Manjimup has been given an up in the tourism industry, thanks to the truffle industry. It has helped rejuvinate the old town.

I love truffle but it's a tad too expensive for me to be using it in everyday cooking, or be dining in fine restaurants on lobster tail salad with truffle oil everyday. If only...

$3000 a kilo - would love to get into truffle farming - good luck to them!

I have never tried truffle's - but would probably order something to get a taste.

NZ might be catching us in the wine stakes, but looks like we are overtaking them in the truffle production.

We had this bruschetta with asparagus, prosciutto, and truffle oil when we were down south. It was one of the most delicious things I've tasted.
